A couple of years ago, I self-funded a web startup. My lead programmer was a health and fitness nut. Part of his “thing” was to sit on one of those bouncy exercise balls instead of a chair when he was doing his marathon coding sessions. He said it helped his posture.
Of course, it was right around this time that that episode of The Office came out where Dwight was sitting on an exercise ball and Jim popped it with a scissors. So, for several weeks, we made fun of the guy and called him Dwight. Still, he would get off of work every day and go for a 50 might bike ride.
Meanwhile, every day by 3 pm, the left side of my neck cramps up so bad that I can’t turn my head. Most days, my work day comes to an end because I physically can’t sit and type anymore… so you tell me who’s the smarter one.
If you have any tips for my neck problem (I’ve tried everything, different chairs, moving the monitor, keyboard, etc.) I’d love to hear them.
In the meantime, here’s a great rundown of posture improving tips for the workplace:
