For those of you that hadn’t heard, some of the big news this week was that Gtalk, the Google chat application, in now inter-operable with AOL Instant Messenger (AIM, if you’re hip).

Gtalk is available as a standalone downloadable client, but it’s also built into the Gmail online client, as you’ve seen if you’ve logged into Gmail anytime in the last 6 months. I’ve been told that Gtalk is growing in popularity because of this integration with Gmail. Most IT people trust Google, and so whereas most IM clients are blocked by corporate firewalls, Gmail (and thus Gtalk) still make it through.

In other words, if you’ve been getting away with chatting at work this past year, chances are you’ve been doing it through Gtalk. And now you can chat with your AIM buddies too!
