Your Job Search Budget

April 3rd, 2008 · 1 Comment

A commenter left a brief note last week about job search expenses.
I was thinking of writing a more formal post, but as I sat down to think about it, I thought it better to list all the job search expenses I could think of.
I don’t think a lot of people think about the amount of […]

Where The Jobs Are- Look Next Door

April 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

As we all know, even in a recession, not all areas of the economy suffer equally… or at all. As I said before, 2002 would have been a bad year to work in computer programming, but would have been a great year to be hired as a programmer at Google.
And this is true for geography […]

Interview AND Resume Tip- The Job Description Is Just The Starting Point

March 31st, 2008 · 3 Comments

Several times on this blog, I’ve railed against the narrow mindset of people looking for jobs. A successful job candidate doesn’t just prove she’s adequate, […]

Handwritting Samples Useful When Screening Job Applicants?

March 24th, 2008 · No Comments

Both Cheezhead and SavvySugar are a bit perplexed by the new recruiting startup WrittenInc.
I can’t say that I blame them.
Apparently, this company allows employers to collect writing sample from job applicants. Then, for a fee, WrittenInc will evaluate these employees based on their handwriting, or, as the company says, their “written body language.”
That’s it! […]

The annual US News (do you still have to say “and World Report”) career guide is out. You can read most of it online here, but I recommend going out and purchasing the issue.
USNews seems to make it’s whole living by doing annual lists. Amongst the lists in this issue: 31 Careers With Bright Futures, […]

March 20th, 2008 · No Comments

It’s a well-established fact, but probably a little-known one.
Your job search expenses can be tax deductible.
We’ve been telling our clients this for years: if you get your resume professionally produced, the cost of the resume is tax deductible.
SavvySugar has a rundown of the details:

Your job search must be for a position in the same field […]

Where The Jobs Are- Healthcare Edition

March 17th, 2008 · 1 Comment

This week’s BusinessWeek has the first solid statistics I’ve seen that prove that health care is the new plastics. (The Graduate reference) By that I mean, health care is finally fulfilling its promise as THE growth industry of the next 50 years.
For about 15 years now, prognosticators have sworn up and down that, for population […]

How To Use RSS To Compliment Your Job Search

March 13th, 2008 · 1 Comment

For those of you that are hip to RSS and RSS feeds (all the people that have subscribed to this feed are clearly hip) you should be aware that almost every major job board now allows you to sign up for job search RSS feeds.
Input the criteria you’re looking for (city, state, industry, keywords, etc.) […]

First Place To Look For Your New Job: Your Current Job

March 10th, 2008 · 2 Comments

You of course know the phrase about the grass being greener on the other side of the fence.
Sometimes, though, the grass is plenty green on THIS side.
I thought of that this weekend when perusing some job search survey data. I’ve posted before about playing the odds in your job search. And you have to figure […]
