If you have career or job search question you would like answered on this blog, click here to Ask Brian.

Brandon from New Jersey asks:

“I just had an interview that I think went exceptionally well. But now of course, I’m having second thoughts. Are there any cues or clues you can point to in an interview and say, yeah, you probably got the job?”

Brian’s answer after the break:

Brian says:

This is nothing scientific, but there are a few key phrases I would look to hear, especially at the end of an interview. If you hear some of the following, I think you’re probably being seriously considered:

  • “You’ll be hearing from us very soon.” This, as opposed to just saying “You’ll hear back from us.” Or saying nothing at all.
  • “What salary range are you looking for?” If they don’t think to ask this, then they’ve probably already decided you’ve reached the end of the road.
  • “Are you sure it’s ok for us to contact your previous employers for references?” Again, if they’re thinking to ask this, it’s because they’re considering you seriously and are thinking of the next logical steps.
  • “When are you available to work?” This is the best clue you can get, IMHO.

These are great tips! I went on an interview a few weeks back and they said at the end, “We’ll be in touch.” What do you think that means? I have made a few follow up calls since then and have yet to hear anything back from them.

If the interviewer walks you out? Is that a good sign?

What if people in your interview are weird or rude? One guy yawned when I was in the middle of my answer and another time, a guy rolled his eyes, sighed a lot, and looked at his watch. This was in the middle of one of their questions. I had no idea what to do.  What does this mean? Should I just shut it down right then and leave? (Resisting the temptation to tell them to shove it up their…). Please do not tell me they do this “on purpose” either because this is total B.S. even if they do.  They are then making themselves look totally unprofessional in the interest of seeing how I respond to stress, etc.? Someone mentioned this to me. This is total B.S. If this is how they gauge my stress then forget it. They should present an option to role play then, not fake it in the middle of an interview.

Most of the jobs are wired already for someone or a large percentage of them and they bring you in to cover their as.

I just interviewed with a company and it went very well.  The manager is going on vacation for a week.  I was told by HR that they will definitely contact me when hes back from vacation.  Does this sound like I am seriously being considered?
